We are thrilled to have Dr. Alison Sigal present for us on the topic of "Airway Centric Pediatric Health Care and Treatment of Tongue Ties Across All Ages". The lecture is a must for anyone who is working with children/ has children/ works in healthcare/ has a tongue!

On Saturday, we will have an in person three hour Category I, PLP lecture by Dr. Peter Hong. "Changing Times... Changing Needs".

Course Title: Airway Centric Pediatric Health Care and Treatment of Tongue Ties Across All Ages

Morning Session:

Optimized craniofacial growth and respiratory function depends on proper tongue function. Tongue ties or low tongue posture that impedes normal growth and function can give rise to sub-optimal growth, palatal collapse, mouth breathing with sleep disordered breathing/OSA, and associated behavioral challenges. Current research from Dr. Sigal’s airway focused practice will be presented with short and long term outcomes that demonstrate the impact of airway centric health care. Breathe, Sleep, Live, Better.

Objectives:

1) Identify essential components of head/neck anatomy for optimized growth & function
2) Identify signs and symptoms of a tongue tie in pediatrics
3) Explain how Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy, breathing re-education & functional scissor frenotomy care can help

Afternoon Session:

Part 2 will expand upon the foundational knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to craniofacial growth, respiratory, and tongue function (learned in Part 1). Individualized Airway Centric Treatment protocols across all ages will be reviewed that include Myofunctional therapy, appliances, and functional scissor tongue frenotomy treatments. Current research from Dr. Sigal’s airway focused practice will be presented with short and long term outcomes that demonstrate the impact of airway centric health care.

 Objectives:

1) Understand how myofunctional therapy & functional scissor frenotomy care can help
2) Appreciate the impact of tongue tie treatment as it relates to the individual’s quality of life across all ages
3) Describe essential components of airway centric care across all ages

Course Title: PLP: Changing times...Changing needs 

Course Description 

The practice of dentistry grows more complex every year. There are more treatment options, procedures, materials, medications and ways to communicate than ever before. While the explosion of knowledge and information has resulted in great advances, it can also create new risks for patients and practitioners. 

This course, offered by the Professional Liability Program (PLP) of the RCDSO, examines emerging issues affecting dentists and offers risk management advice. PLP cases that have been resolved provide illustrations and tips to benefit you in your day-to-day dental practice. 

Learning Objectives 

At the end of the session, participants will have learned: 

• the role of PLP; 

• details of PLP malpractice protection; 

• the basics of offering a refund to a patient; 

• the risks of social media; 

• the role of teledentistry; 

• how good recordkeeping helps manage risk; 

• informed consent from a litigation perspective; and 

• strategies to prevent adverse events in daily practice.
